What are lifting straps:
The lifting strap is used while lifting free weights such as dumbbells and barbells or while doing pull ups. One end of this strap is looped around the wrist while the other end is wrapped around the dumbbell/ barbell or the pull up rod. The lifting strap is available is different material options like nylon, leather and cloth.
Why you should use lifting straps:
When performing certain exercises, apart from the target muscle a number of other muscles are involved to make the movement possible. The weaker muscles tire out before the others, hindering the growth of the target muscle. In most cases, this is caused by a weak grip. Lifting straps help compensate for low grip strength, hence ensuring your target muscle receives the stimulation required for proper growth.
The strap also reduces friction between the skin and the apparatus preventing the formation of calluses.
When should you use lifting straps:
Use lifting straps only when you are unable to complete a lift because of low grip strength. For instance, if you feel your grip gives up on the heaviest set of an exercise, use the straps only on that set.
Note: The use of straps is warranted only for those exercises where you are working against gravity i.e. pushing or pulling away from the floor.
